The 2009 competition season kicks off this weekend and we are excited to see all the teams look this year. Since voting has closed on the preseason poll it's time to present the results and our early picks for 2009-2010. So let's get started... Single A You said: Commerce, edging out Trion. We say: Commerce. Commerce is a dynasty. Looking at their history, they're easily one of the best programs in the state in any division. They have a string of State Championships that rival bigger schools like Chattahoochee and Peachtree Ridge. The voting was close and both Commerce and Trion were way out ahead of the competition. However we don't think that Commerce is going to be happy with bringing home anything less than first place for another year. Look for the Tigers to step it up and re-establish themselves as THE team in single A. AA You said: Calhoun, edging out Coosa. We say: Repeat for Coosa Coosa had a much deserved win at State last year beating out some tough teams in the AA division. Calhoun has a few wins under their belt and are no strangers to being in that top spot. They just couldn't put it together when it mattered most. No doubt Calhoun will be back looking to remedy the problems from last year. However, Coosa was just rock solid and now has momentum on their side. So, we're sticking with Coosa for our early pick. But to be certain, we're not saying it's going to be easy. Keep an eye on AA. It'll be a fight to the finish! AAA You said: Columbus, hands down. We say: Columbus, hands down. Seriously, did you guys see Columbus last year?? They simply blew everyone away, including Sean on more than one episode of GotSpirit TV! We don't know what's in the water down there in Columbus but all those teams come out looking strong and enjoy the "home field advantage" at State. Look for a fight for dominance in the city between Columbus and Northside Columbus as the season progresses. AAA will definately be decided by the winner of that battle. But we're expecting to see Columbus as the reigning champion when all is said and done. AAAA You said: Northgate, Northgate, Northgate. We say: Northgate, but it won't be easy. Northgate was just AWESOME last year. Sean called them to win it all WAAAAY before November and he was right. However, AAAA is easily one of the toughest divisions in the state and it only gets more difficult every year. There is always the chance that a team like Loganville, Lee County or Starr's Mill could show up and take the crown. You guys voted overwhelmingly in favor of Northgate. We agree, however, we think they're going to have to bring it every.single.week. There really isn't any time for Northgate to get too comfortable and expect to cruise to another State Championship. It is going to be hard work. They'll need to have a near flawless and injury free season. Otherwise they'll have opened the door for any number of teams just waiting for an opportunity to take over. AAAAA You said: Grayson, with Chattahoochee a close second. We say: It's time for the 'Hooch to be back on top. Grayson has really come along in the last couple years and made a name for themselves. They've easily stepped up their dominance to levels formerly seen only by Peachtree Ridge when they were in this division. However, the Golden Rams are a young team and have narrowly missed out on the top spot. Chattahoochee is another dynasty program who has been frustrated by being out of the top spot for the last couple of years and they've got to be just itching to re-assert themselves as the team to beat. Our guess is that they're going to come into this season focused and intense. The big question will be, will the young Grayson team be ready for the challenge or fold under the pressure from the veteran 'Hooch? COED You said: Peachtree Ridge, without a doubt. We say: The 'Ridge makes up for last year with a big return to form. Last year's champions, Woodland, have moved back to the all-girl division which leaves that top spot open for the taking. And we're sure the Lions can't WAIT to pounce! Simply put, Peachtree Ridge knows how to win. They know what it takes and how to put it all together when it matters. Perhaps more importantly they saw their perfect season disappear on the biggest stage of the year. We seriously doubt they're going to let that happen again. Look for the 'Ridge to come out swinging early. What do you think? Agree? Disagree? Think we're totally off-base or know something that we're overlooking?
